On an unhealthy air day

  • Orange (101-150): children, older adults and people with heart or lung disease should cut long or hard outdoor exertion.
  • Red (151-200) and above: everyone should limit time outdoors; keep windows shut and run a HEPA filter if you have one.
  • Wildfire smoke is the usual cause of the highest readings — what helps: wildfire smoke guide.
  • Your state or local air agency issues the official air quality alerts; they are also in our US weather alerts.

What this page shows, and what it misses

The latest hourly AQI from each AirNow monitoring site in the lower 48 states, for fine particles (PM2.5) and ozone, refreshed every 30 minutes; where a site measures both, the higher is shown. These data are preliminary: they are not fully verified and can change. Values, categories and colours are shown exactly as AirNow reports them. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico are not covered here.

Data: U.S. EPA AirNow and the federal, state, local and tribal air quality agencies that operate the monitors (list of agencies).
