Watch or warning?
- Tornado watch: the ingredients are there over a wide area for the next few hours. Know where you will shelter and keep alerts on.
- Tornado warning: a tornado is happening or imminent near you. Shelter now — do not wait to see it.
- Sirens are for people outdoors. Do not rely on hearing one indoors; use phone alerts or a NOAA Weather Radio.
- Never shelter under a highway overpass. Wind speeds increase there.
What this page shows, and what it misses
Tornado warnings and watches straight from the US National Weather Service (api.weather.gov), refreshed every two minutes. A warning can be issued and expire inside that window, so if the sky looks threatening, act on what you see and hear. Tornadoes that touch down are recorded in our tornado tracker. Every other alert type, by state: US weather alerts.
