When cyclones come

The North Indian Ocean has two cyclone seasons a year: April to June, before the monsoon, and October to December, after it. Most storms form in the Bay of Bengal, and the post-monsoon peak in November brings its deadliest ones. The Arabian Sea, which faces Pakistan and western India, sees fewer storms, most often in May–June and October–November.

A storm gets a name only when it reaches cyclonic-storm strength. The names come from a list agreed by thirteen countries, used in order — why the next one is called Arnab.

What matters when one is coming

  • Water kills more people than wind. Storm surge and flooding cause most cyclone deaths. Know whether your home is in a surge zone.
  • Leave early if told to. Roads flood before the strongest winds arrive.
  • The calm eye is not the end. The wind returns from the other side.

What our records show, and what they miss

Tropical cyclones recorded by GDACS so far in 2026, by basin:

Bay of Bengal: 1 North-west Pacific (typhoons): 19 Atlantic (hurricanes): 7 East and central Pacific (hurricanes): 15

A storm counts as active here while GDACS or the National Hurricane Center still carries it, checked every ten minutes. GDACS lists storms once they are tracked internationally, so a depression that the IMD has just named can take some hours to appear, and weak systems that never become storms may not appear at all. Wind speeds are the feeds' own estimates and change with every advisory. News reports about storms are on our cyclone page, but they never decide the answer above. Method: about · data: open data.
