Driving in fog: the Motorway Police's advice

  • Travel in daylight — NHMP advises roughly 10 am to 6 pm in the fog season — and avoid night journeys.
  • Fog lights, not high beams. High beams reflect off the fog and blind you.
  • Slow down and leave a much bigger gap. Most fog crashes are pile-ups.
  • Check your wipers and lights before you leave, and call 130 before setting out.
  • If you stop, get off the road. Pull fully onto the shoulder with hazard lights on, and wait behind the barrier, not in the car.

Why a little more speed matters so much: road accidents and speed.

Which motorways close in fog

On 14 January 2026, fog closed sections of seven motorways at once:

  • M-1 Peshawar – Rashakai
  • M-2 Thokar Niaz Baig – Chakri
  • M-3 Faizpur – Darkhana
  • M-4 Pindi Bhattian – Abdul Hakeem
  • M-5 Rohri – Rahim Yar Khan
  • M-11 Lahore – Sambrial
  • M-14 Daud Khel – Isa Khel

Closures cluster from early December to late January. source ↗

What this page shows, and what it misses

Closures above are entered by our editors from NHMP announcements, with the time each was last confirmed. Fog closures change by the hour, so after 8 hours without a confirmation the page warns you instead of presenting an old closure as current. NHMP's helpline (130) is always the final word. Smog makes fog worse: smog in Lahore today. More numbers: emergency numbers in Pakistan.
