Near an erupting volcano
- Follow park and county closures. At Kilauea, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park closes areas when fountains or gas make them unsafe.
- Volcanic gas (vog) irritates eyes and lungs; people with asthma should limit time outdoors when it drifts their way.
- Ash: stay indoors, close windows, wear an N95 mask outside, and keep ash off car engines.
- Worldwide volcano news is in our volcano record; Italy's Campi Flegrei has its own page.
What this page shows, and what it misses
Every US and US-territory volcano whose alert level is above NORMAL, from the USGS volcano notification system, with the summary line of the latest notice for each. A volcano that is not listed is at NORMAL / GREEN. Short updates during an eruption episode are posted by the observatories between formal notices, so a fast-changing eruption can be ahead of this page.
