Why Campi Flegrei shakes so often
Campi Flegrei is a large volcanic caldera west of Naples, home to about half a million people. Since 2005 the ground around Pozzuoli has been rising again — a process called bradyseism — and the rising ground cracks rock as it goes, producing frequent small, shallow earthquakes, often in swarms. Because they are shallow, even small ones are felt strongly nearby.
The Civil Protection Department sets the volcano's alert level and publishes the emergency plans; the Osservatorio Vesuviano issues the monitoring bulletins.
What this page shows, and what it misses
Every earthquake INGV located within about 11 km of the caldera centre in the last 30 days, refreshed every ten minutes. Magnitudes are INGV's (Md is duration magnitude, the usual scale there) and early values can be revised. It is not a forecast: nobody can predict when the next earthquake or an eruption will happen.
