Near a wildfire
- Follow local orders first: civil protection SMS alerts (112 alerts in many EU countries) and police instructions beat any map.
- Leave early if told to, by the route you are given; never drive into smoke you cannot see through.
- In Europe the emergency number is 112. Keep windows shut in smoke; an FFP2 mask helps outdoors.
- Smoke and health: what wildfire smoke does to you.
What this page shows, and what it misses
Thermal hotspots detected by the VIIRS instrument on the Suomi NPP satellite over Europe, North Africa and the Middle East's western edge, grouped by the nearest town. Low-confidence pixels are dropped. The satellite passes about twice a day, so a fire can start and end unseen, and cloud or thick smoke hides fires. Hotspots are not confirmed fires and not burned area; national fire services and EFFIS give the official picture.
