Reading the Punjab AQI
Punjab EPA uses a 0–500 scale with its own bands — not the same as the US scale many apps show, so the same number can get a different label.

| Satisfactory | 51–100 | Normal activity; very sensitive people take care. |
| Moderate | 101–150 | People with asthma or heart disease cut long outdoor exertion. |
| Unhealthy for sensitive groups | 151–200 | Children, older people and anyone with lung or heart disease stay indoors more. |
| Unhealthy | 201–300 | Everyone limits time outside; keep windows shut at night and early morning. |
| Very unhealthy | 301–400 | Avoid outdoor exercise; well-fitted N95 masks outdoors. |
| Hazardous | 401–500 | Stay indoors as much as possible; seek care for breathlessness or chest pain. |

What Punjab has announced this season

- Schools: the School Education Department told schools to limit outdoor activities under the pre-smog plan (August). source ↗
- Brick kilns: about 8,000 kilns converted to zigzag technology; by 13 October the EPA had inspected 2,710, demolished 51 and sealed 51. source ↗
- Crop burning: 67 quick-response units with fire bowsers in 10 hotspot districts, plus drones and night squads along the motorways. source ↗
- Vehicles: drivers urged to get an emission certificate by 15 November; mobile testing at 9 sites in Lahore. source ↗
In past seasons, school closures were ordered by the Punjab EPA and extended by the School Education Department — watch both.
On a bad smog day
- Keep windows shut in the early morning and at night, when smog is thickest.
- A well-fitted N95 helps outdoors; cloth and surgical masks do little.
- Fog plus smog closes motorways — check motorway status before a journey.
- Burning anything at home, even leaves, adds to it.
