Earthquakes in the UK
The UK is far from a plate boundary, but stresses in the crust still release in small earthquakes, most often in western Scotland, Wales, the Welsh borders, Cornwall and the North Sea. Almost all are below magnitude 3 and do no damage. Many people who feel one first think a lorry has passed or something heavy has fallen — reporting it to the BGS helps map what was felt.
