What this page shows, and what it misses

Two CDC weekly numbers for each state. The flu share of ER visits is the percentage of all emergency department visits that were diagnosed as flu, from hospitals reporting to the National Syndromic Surveillance Program, with CDC's own trend label. The respiratory illness level is CDC's official grade for all acute respiratory illness — flu, COVID-19, RSV and colds together — so a state can be graded High while flu is still low. Neither number counts flu cases: most people with flu never go to an ER, and not every hospital reports. Territories and states without data show "—". Flu virus in sewage is on our wastewater page.
