What this page shows, and what it misses

Shows: the events of 2026 that Global Incident Tracker rated most severe, in three families, each ranked by severity, then by the number of separate reports, then newest first. Warnings, forecasts and satellite hotspot detections are left out.

Misses: deaths and damage, which this list never ranks. Accidents and health and security events come from news reports, which rarely carry a measurement, so most of them sit at moderate and are ordered by how widely they were reported. A single event can appear twice if two reports could not be matched with certainty. Months before 9 August 2026 hold few records.

QuestionsAbout this list

What was the most severe natural disaster of 2026?
In Global Incident Tracker's records, the earthquake in Indonesia on 3 October 2026, rated extreme with 6 separate reports (as of 2 November 2026). The full ranked list is on this page.
What was the most widely reported accident of 2026?
In Global Incident Tracker's records, the road accident in Spain on 28 October 2026, with 1 separate report (as of 2 November 2026). Accidents come from news reports, so most are rated moderate: news does not carry a measurement.
Why is this not a list of the deadliest disasters?
Because Global Incident Tracker does not hold reliable death tolls for live events. Early figures change for days, and we do not publish casualty numbers unless an official source states them. This list ranks by severity and by the number of separate reports instead. For confirmed death tolls of past disasters, see the history section.
How is severity decided?
From what each source reports: earthquake magnitude, the colour of a GDACS alert, a hurricane's wind speed, or the warning level of an agency. News reports without a measurement are rated minor or moderate. Severity is a monitoring signal, not an official damage assessment.

  • What is counted: records of events by the date they happened (UTC), after duplicate reports were merged. Official warnings are counted separately, never as events. How records are sourced and checked.
  • What is missing: types with no official feed exist here only because news reported them, so their counts are a floor, not a total. Coverage by type.
  • Not a death toll: severity is this site’s monitoring signal, not an official damage or casualty assessment.
  • Ranked by severity, then number of reports. No death tolls are stated or ranked.
