When does a storm get a name?
The Met Office, Met Éireann and the Dutch KNMI name a storm when it is expected to cause medium or high impacts in any of the three countries — in practice, when amber or red warnings are likely, usually for wind. Naming is meant to make warnings easier to follow, so a name means: check the warnings and plan for disruption.
Storms that arrive already named — the remains of an Atlantic hurricane, for example — keep their original name.
What this page shows, and what it misses
The list is the official one for the season. Whether a name has been used is read from our records: a name counts once at least 3 reports from the UK, Ireland or the Netherlands refer to a storm by it, and headlines that only speculate ("could be named") are ignored. The Met Office announces each name on its website first, so for a few hours after a naming this page can lag. Warnings in force: UK weather warnings.
