Reading a gauge
- The number is not the depth. It is measured from a fixed gauge zero, so the shipping channel holds more water than the reading suggests.
- Low means below the gauge's mean low water (MNW); high means above its mean high water (MHW). Flood warnings come from each German state's flood centre.
- On the Rhine, barges load by the Kaub gauge in the Middle Rhine gorge; as it falls they carry less and freight costs rise.
- Swimming in the Rhine is dangerous at any level: strong currents and ship wash pull swimmers under.
What this page shows, and what it misses
Gauges on Germany's federal waterways, as published by the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration every 15 minutes. These are raw readings ("Rohdaten") that can still be corrected. Small rivers run by the German states are not in this network — for those and for flood warnings, use your state's Hochwasserzentrale.
